Self-care skills are the everyday tasks undertaken so children are ready to participate in life activities (including dressing, eating, cleaning teeth). They are often referred to as the activities of daily living and it is expected that children develop independence in these as they mature.
A fun way to introduce these skills with toddlers is to use the tuff tray filled with water and a selection of plastic baby dolls. Give the children cleaning tools, soap, hairbrush, toothbrush, sponges and towels. Demonstrate how to complete each task and discuss why we do this; brushing and washing hair, washing bodies, cleaning teeth etc.
Add some foam and bubbles for play after and the children will spends hours having fun! We repeated this task over a few days as it was so popular with the children.
